It is such a great idea to not only get a family portrait, but also get a record of the goings on in your house during that special first year of your child's life. Although life can be a little hectic, there's no extra time required to have a documentary photo session; I just turn up when a nap is finished, document with candid photography for an hour, then take a family portrait at the end of the session.
When I first met Max (very soon to be 1) and his parents his usual nap didn't pay off and despite a few keepers we decided it would be best for me to come back the week after. His true colours came out and we got the little man's cheeky personality captured to mark his first year. While I was there it was great to take a few stories and tips on board for our own future child!
Meet the Nelsons...
It was an incredible experience becoming a dad for the first time. Seeing that little human being look up at you for the first time is overwhelming. I was there of course and managed to take some photos and video of his first few moments, which family and close friends have been lucky enough to see. I'm so very proud of my wife Nicole who had quite and ordeal to go through and trying my best to look after her and the house while she tends to Oliver.
Of course I'm going nuts with the photos and so glad I invested in an incredible little camera that has taken the majority of his first photos with. There'll be more to come on Oliver, but for now there's a few photos of the little guy here for you to see:
Blue fluffy boots, hats and blankets courtesy of the Blair family, who I've had the pleasure of shooting two weddings for over the last couple of years.

I think she loves my 135 f2 L. Me too Emily! That's a great lens and I'm glad you've got good taste :)
She's a very clever, strong little girl who loves to share and play peek-a-boo in Japanese. Of course I played along with the help of mum and dad teaching me the phrases...

How adorable! I saw the lens shot before reading the story and my stomach almost jumped into my throat. :) Great capture!

I shot Lucy with her parents last year on a very cold day; this year I ran into the family while walking the dog in Winchester Fells back in the summer and Ann asked me to come back for some an update to little Lucy's portfolio. So we met on a late autumn day and got some great photos of Lucy playing in her local playground in Medford, then retired to their home and got some shots of the family relaxing in front of West Side Story (Lucy's favourite by all accounts!)
Hope to see you next year!
