British Rob's Blog

Welcome! Otherwise known as British Rob in photo circles, I'm a Boston wedding photographer and recent transplant from England. While the government likes to call me a resident alien I feel quite at home in New England :)

Suzanne and Todd are getting married in early September and we met last week at the Royal Sonesta in Cambridge to take a look around the reception venue with them. The hotel is situated right beside the Charles River, with a beautiful backdrop of Boston. We took the opportunity to also take some photos despite a looming storm.

So a while back I promised to post a slideshow of Caitlin and Jon when I'd succeeded in licensing some more music. You see, to be able to play tracks on the Internet you need to have permission and the rights from the artist to do so; you can't just simply upload a track you've purchased on iTunes and play it on your website, especially when synchronising to a slideshow. Illegal and could land you in a lot of trouble. Besides, as someone who sells digital content myself, I'm rightly concerned not just about protecting my own artistic work, but the work of others.

I've recently licensed some outstanding tracks from two English artists. 'Little Laughter' by Jo Harrop was immediately put to use on the slideshow for Pip and Dan with the kind permission of Jo - check out her MySpace page. She's got a very unique voice and just happens to be the better half of my friend JC.

I also went to YouLicense too and found Molly Beanland, who lives in London, but spends a fair amount of time around the US recording and singing - and what a voice and talent for song writing she has! To my excitement, she accepted my offer for the right to play 'Photographs', a wonderful piece that is now playing alongside Theresa and Matt's wedding and against my portfolio. She's also just allowed me to use 'What I Fell For', a track that is now really growing on me after just a few plays and I've placed to the slideshow of Caitlin and Jon (I told you I'd put it online eventually!).

So I feel pretty lucky to be able to use such great and unique independent music - thanks to Molly and Jo. You should check out my Music page, which tells you what the tracks are and where you can purchase a copy for your own personal use. You can expect to here these tracks more over the coming months to accompany my photographs.

Here's the slideshow of Caitlin and Jon (hit that HD button to go 1080 full screen and crank up the volume!)....

Theresa and Matt enjoyed their wedding day at Topsfield, at the beautiful Congregational Church and Topsfield Commons.

It was a perfect day for photography - slightly overcast and not too hot when we came to do the group photos and the very happy couple. This was a really fun wedding for me - Theresa and Matt were a ton of fun and extremely welcoming and caring about their guests and myself. The wedding party seemed to soon warm to me after some good humour about my English accent.

Both Theresa and Matt and all of the guests really lifted the roof of the venue with an incredible party and a LOT of laughter. Their friends were a really lovely group of people and I don't think I've ever been stopped so many times at the end of the night and hugged and thanked.

See you both soon - enjoy the photos!

Pip and Dan were married on May 24, 2008 at St Anselm College, Manchester, NH where they had both met. I had first met them in mid February and was immediately drawn to Pip's accent, which was surprisingly to me from my home country. She moved here many years ago and they currently both live in Tennessee.

Around a month after we met, Pip secretly contacted me about the possibility of getting a limited edition framed print to give to Dan at the rehearsal dinner. At that point I had some of my own personal work online, but after she asked about the possibility of an image of the skyline of Boston I remembered the image I took of Boston on a cold December evening from the roof of the Tufts chapel (where I was married last year). It was just what she was looking for and I arranged to have it expertly printed and framed. When I turned up at their hotel on the morning of the wedding, it appeared that Dan was utterly surprised by it and was extremely pleased that they were adding another piece of artwork to their walls.

The wedding was a fun and intimate affair. They both got ready a floor apart from each other and I was able to go back and forth between the rooms to get some great coverage of them getting ready...

We then headed off to the church at St Anselm College where there were some tearful and funny moments...

Then it was off to the Bedford Village Inn for an upbeat reception... I think all of the English contingent thought I'd been flown over also :) It was great to see some fascinators and hats worn again!

Thanks Pip! Maybe that's why fashion models never smile? That and the wrinkles they'd get!

Cool that you sold that print - it was freezing that day, my toes just defrosted a few min. ago. Can you send me a link/jpeg of the file she selected? Would love to see.

Recently I had the pleasure of spending a sunny late spring evening with Caitlin and Jon on the beaches of up-market Marblehead. They're getting married in August and we wanted to wait until the New England weather co-operated to get some great evening shots and we certainly came away with those!

We started out on the beach to get them warmed up to the camera (that took about 2 minutes!)...

Then we headed over to the northern point of Marblehead where we got some backlit shots beside the light tower and of them relaxing on a westward facing bench...

Then we went off in search of a public beach and for those of you who know the area there's not so much of that! I was looking for a spot where we'd have the sun setting over the water behind them and I could fill with some off camera flash. Just as the sun was in its last 15 minutes we found a spot on a public beach that was perfect and after some mild scrambling over some rocks we finished off the session with some incredible sunset shots.

Looking forward greatly to shooting their wedding in August - they're such a fun, personable couple. Stay tuned for an update to this post with a slideshow once I get the music licensing cleared...
